The ‘European' part of the name is important, as it identifies which version of the wheel the game is played on. If you were unaware there were different forms of roulette, we'll explain it simply. There's European roulette, and there's American roulette. They're both played in exactly the same way, with one crucial difference. In European roulette, there's only one ‘zero' value, marked in green on the wheel. In American roulette, there are two, the second of which is marked as a double zero. That means there's one extra slot the ball could land in, and therefore a marginally lower chance it will land in whichever slot you've placed your bet on.

One slot might not sound like it will make a huge difference, but it does. It ups the number of possible final destinations for the roulette ball from 37 to 38. If we're talking percentages, that makes it 2.7% less likely that you'll get the outcome you want from the spin. If you only play for one single spin, then it will barely make any difference at all, but if you're sticking around to play ten, twenty or thirty spins, that tiny difference really starts to add up.
